Jokes have been a part of man's daily life for centuries. We hear it, laugh at it, ignore it, re-use it, collect it, and even "love it". It has affected our lives so many times and in so many ways, yet it seems that we are completely missing out on one key question: What is a joke? And more importantly, what's so funny about it? A joke may be defined as a short story or series of words or actions, communicated with the intent of provoking laughter or amusement towards an audience or oneself. Jokes are generally perceived to be unserious, carefree and juvenile. There is, however, a certain mystery about jokes that most of us do not even care to understand. The encyclopaedia description of humour is "the ability or quality of people, objects or situations to evoke feelings of amusement in other people." It pertains to any form of human communication that triggers, or is aimed to trigger laughter - including jokes. |
